Day 9 & 10: 31 Days to Reset Your Life – Find an Accountability Partner & Write a Letter to Your Lizard Brain

WOW! I am already on day 10!! I am so pleased that I’ve stuck to this. Although I don’t post daily, I do the exercises daily so that I don’t get too behind and then it is too overwhelming to try and catch up. I will say that this experience so far has shown me a lot of things. Things that I knew about myself but had gotten lost or muffled.
For instance, I really place high value on honesty and integrity. It is the core of who I am and not only to I value it, but I live it. Realizing that made me smile because in today’s world, there is very little honesty and integrity going around and that alone sets me apart! Anywho, onto the exercises….
Day 9: Find an Accountability Partner
This one was easy – choose an accountability partner to help keep you on track to achieving the goals you’ve identified. I chose my mom. Why? Because she will make it a point to stay on top of me (as she already does) and I know that she also wants the best for my life and my son’s life…so it was kinda a no-brainer.
Day 10: Write a Letter to Your Lizard Brain
What is the Lizard Brain?!? I’m glad you asked because I didn’t know either. Seth Godin (http://www.sethgodin.com/sg/) describes it as:
“We say we want one thing, then we do another. We say we want to be successful but we sabotage the job interview. We say we want a product to come to market, but we sandbag the shipping schedule. We say we want to be thin but we eat too much. We say we want to be smart but we skip class or don’t read that book the boss lent us.
The contradictions never end. When someone shows up and acts without contradiction, we’re amazed. When an athlete just does the sport, or when a writer just writes the words, we can’t help but watch, astonished at the purity of their actions. Why is it so difficult to do what we say we’re going to do?
The lizard brain.”

We were challenged to write a letter to our lizard brain acknowledging its presence, but declaring freedom from it. Here’s mine:
Dear Lizard Brain,

How YOU doing?!?! (In my best Wendy Williams
voice). Yea, I see you trying to rear your ugly head again and most of the
time, you win. But this time is just a little different. Not because I am
completely changed, but because I’m aware of what you are and why you show up. For
the sole purpose of trying halt my progress as I try to find my happiness and
grow.

You know like earlier this week when I had planned
on waking up early to start my day off with Jillian Michaels, you showed up in
the form of laziness. I wanted to get up and start working on toning my body,
but instead I sabotaged my success by choosing to stay in the warm bed.

Or in the past when I thought about taking the steps
to start my own business and leave my “comfortable job’, although I’m unhappy and
unfulfilled, you showed up as fear and reminded me that it would be risky.

Well, see you now, plain as day. I know what you’re
doing and I don’t like it. Yes, I know that you’re afraid of change and the
unknown. But you have to understand that whatever happens in my life will work out
for my good. I was put here on earth for a purpose and you are keeping me from
fulfilling that potential.

That is, until now.

You will no longer stop my progress in living my
ideal life. The next time we meet, I will throw up the deuces and keep it
moving!!

It’s been real, but frankly we’ve grown apart
and it’s time for me to move on without you.
Sincerely,

Jasmine

Til next time…

P.S. – My Deep Tissue Massage yesterday was ON POINT! Much needed 90 minutes of ME time! 🙂
